So for my husbands birthday I got him goat saddles. Trust me it was something he wanted. These saddles help distribute weight of meat so if your packing an animal out it’s not rubbing against the goats.
Today we tried out there saddles on them. It was definitely a two person job. Dopey I had to love on him and he stayed still. Grumpy just had to eat and he was happy. These saddles are still a little big so they have some growing to do to fill them out.
I only have pictures of grumpy in his saddle dopey ran around to much with his. Can’t wait till they can start packing things.
One morning I get up for a run look out to see one goat (dopey) is out of the pin. I got outside open the gate to put him back then grumpy decides to get out. My next best option is food to tempt them in, as I go in the house the door doesn’t close fast enough. You guessed it dopey. Is in my house walking around. I slowly approach him, because I don’t want pee or poop in my house. Took me 5 min to get him out of the house. Pinned them both up and went on my run.
Day two think I would have learned from the first day I get my run in and go feed the goats. Yet Again dopey sees a way in the house and takes it. This time it wasn’t as crazy too get him. I learned my lesson now watch the door and I’ll spray them with water. Spraying a goat with water is just like a cat because they don’t like it.
But moral of the story if you get goats beware they definitely Act like children.
So we got everything packed the night before left early morning to start our day. The boys did good in there trailer no issues with it. We get to camp and you could see the wheels turning. FOOD!! Let me say we feed them a lot. But seeing all the weeds and grass and trees they thought they were in heaven with food.
We set up camp and relaxed with them for a little. Later in the day we decided to go on a hike. There first actual hike. (We has no packs for them this time they are still in the mail. Later this month we will have them). They did so good on the hike my husband was the leader than you had dopey, grumpy, and me. All in a line hiking. We hiked for maybe a mile and a half. Then my husband was turned talking to me and I saw a coyote and started backing up pointing at it he turned and saw it run away. I told him the animal came out dropped something than ran. So he went to check it out. It had a deer leg it dropped. (Sorry I know gruesome I didn’t take a picture because it was gross) we kept walking got to a creek and you could smell a rotten deer. So we decided to head back that day in case a pack of coyotes wasn’t to far from us. Now let me tell you how I explained the coyote to my husband in my mind it looked like a warewolf. (Maybe really not that big).
The next day we hiked the same trail again to see a waterfall. We didn’t see any animals this time. The boys did awesome on the hike. Let me state though goats really don’t like walking through water. We had to pass like two creeks and a couple big puddles. Dopey walked through most of the water grumpy did some until he saw me take the paths that had less water, because my boots only went to my ankle. Grumpy I learned is a snacker every couple of seconds he would find food to take with him.
They listened to us well and behaved really well when we got back to camp if my husband wasn’t walking around they were constantly sitting by me to make sure I was okay. And the loved getting scratched because I have better nails then my husband.
Fun fact they love to eat tortillas.
Stay tuned for more adventures and thank you for reading this any questions just comment below and I’ll try my best to answer.
Bah bah!! The morning cries I hear for food: with the wonderful crying In the morning to be feed I’m finding more of a love for these goats. Every morning they can look in my room and see if I’m awake and that means it’s breakfast time. Here lately in the mornings though the goats and my husband have been going on runs with me. They do pretty well, we do keep them on leashes. For the most part they are kinda like dogs. The daily walks and runs teach them how to act. It’s shows them to stay close to us and not do there own thing. They do pretty good with it. I will say with two male goats there is always and Alpha male. So with an alpha usually one leads the other goat. Right now they kinda keep switching up on that.
Morning runs
They also have a love for playing bc let’s face it they are still kids. We have been coming up with things for them to jump on and play with. I have a bunny that they adore she goes outside with them from time to time to play. They like to chase each other and eat together.
Next week we will take them on there first hike so I will be posting about that next week. I can’t wait to see them in action.
When my husband came up with the idea to get goats I thought he was nuts. We had a long talk on why he wanted them. He took some trying to convince me. Now where I’m at in life couldn’t see my life without my goats.
His reasoning to get goats
1. Pack goats carry stuff for you when hiking
2. Help him carry the stuff he needs for hunting
3. They are cute pets. ( this reasoning I think was just to get me to say yes)
When we got the goats.
Let me say this I have never owned a goat. (He has been around several) but when we went to get the goats we got them in my car, and my car stunk for days after them. So not a good start to me liking goats. We get them home and put them in an electric fence. Seems like it would keep them in right wrong. First day my husband went to work at night they kept getting out of the electric fence. Before people say “It hurt” them I promise it didn’t. They just walked on through. I Value my sleep and didn’t want to stay up all night with them. So had to put them in a huge rabbit hutch I have. (This hutch is big enough I can sleep in). Let me say this never had goats before didn’t know how to get them from point a to point b. So I bear hugged them and carried them awkwardly to the hutch. They did good that night a week later we finally figured out how to keep them in a pin and used stock panels. So far no issues of them getting out. The first two weeks it was the trial area where I loved and hated them at times. My husband took that long to name them. Ones name is dopey his the dark color one and the lighter one is grumpy.
Through the course of these blogs I’ll be telling all the ups and downs of raising pack goats. Don’t get me wrong now I’m in love with them so keep reading to see our experiences. I’m not saying we know best just that we are learning.
